The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is an admission requirement for non-native English-speaking students who intend to study in an English-speaking country. The TOEFL was designed to measure one’s ability to apply and combine English language skills in order to effectively comprehend, communicate and study within an English-speaking academic setting. The test is administered worldwide, and is offered primarily as an Internet-based exam.

What content does the TOEFL cover?
The TOEFL consists of four equal sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing, with a total time of approximately 4 hours. The TOEFL evaluates a student’s ability to use and understand English in an academic setting. The Reading section includes 3-5 passages from academic texts, and each passage is accompanied by 12-14 questions. The Listening section contains 6-9 conversations and/or lectures, each containing 5-6 questions. The Speaking section includes 6 tasks and 6 questions, and the Writing section includes 2 tasks and 2 questions. The TOEFL is primarily an Internet-based exam (iBT), although test-takers may take the TOEFL as a paper-based test in certain regions where internet is unavailable. A total of 0 to 30 points can be obtained for each of the four sections. The total score is the sum of these four subscores (0 to 120). There is no such thing as a passing or failing score for the TOEFL. In the past, most universities generally looked for a total score of 100; however, score requirements vary by school. Test scores are valid for two years after the test date, and there is no limit to the number of times one may take the test. The TOEFL was created for students worldwide whose first language is not English. Most American universities (undergraduate and graduate programs), boarding schools, as well as a growing number of government agencies, businesses and scholarship programs require non-native English speakers to take the TOEFL as an admission requirement. What are the TOEFL test dates and how does one register?
Students can take the TOEFL online at regionally contracted test centers worldwide. The test is offered approximately 1-3 times per month, depending on the city and country in which the test is administered. Information regarding registration, test dates, locations and cost should be verified and confirmed on the official TOEFL website (www.ets.org/toefl).Should my student take the SAT or ACT in addition to the TOEFL?
Testing requirements vary at the individual colleges and universities. Some schools do require the SAT or ACT as well as results of the TOEFL. The TOEFL is typically required if English is not your first language. Please consult with the admissions department at each school in which you are interested to determine that school’s exact testing requirements.
