The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) Test is required for admission into many Ph.D. programs as well as for some Master's programs. While some universities may request a GRE Subject Test in the applicant's field, most programs that ask for testing require GRE General Test scores.

What content does the GRE cover? The GRE exam consists of three parts: the Analytical Writing Assessment, the Quantitative section, and the Verbal section. The Analytical Writing Assessment is not a part of the scaled verbal/quantitative score but is considered very important. This section consists of two essays. The Verbal section includes four types of questions that are intermixed throughout the section: antonyms, analogies, sentence completions, and reading comprehension. The Quantitative section has four common content areas that are mixed throughout the section: arithmetic, elementary algebra, geometry, and data analysis. Three question types appear: problem-solving, quantitative analysis, and data interpretation.
How is the GRE scored? Scores range from 200 to 800, and separate Verbal and Quantitative scores are given. Each essay is given a score between 1 and 6. The overall writing score is the average of the two essay scores. All scores compiled within the previous 5 years are submitted to requested schools.
If I did well on my SAT, does that mean I'll do well on the GRE? Of all of the graduate school entrance exams, the GRE is most similar to the SAT. Depending on your major in college, you may have spent more time studying the humanities or the sciences, which means you will probably have to do some additional work in the other subject area for your scores to be consistent with your SAT results. In general, math scores tend to be consistent across exams. The GRE verbal section is much more difficult than the SAT verbal section, however, so don't be surprised if you see a 100 point decrease in your verbal score from your SAT, even if verbal is your strength. With preparation and practice, you can increase your scores. Call us and one of our educational consultants would be happy to speak with you and make a personalized program recommendation.
How long is my GRE score valid? Although GRE scores are valid for five years, some schools would like to see scores from within the past three years. Check with your schools for their preferences.
Where will tutoring take place? If you live in the New York, Boston, or Philadelphia areas, your tutor will meet where it's convenient for you, whether that's in your home, at a nearby library, or in our office. If you do not live near one of these cities, our tutors can work with you online through our Inspirica Anywhere program. They also travel nationally and internationally to work with students in-person through Custom Trips.
When are the GRE test dates, and how do I register? The GRE is offered throughout the year by appointment. It is a computer-based test that is given at specific locations around the country. Go to www.gre.org and look for a test center near you. You can take the GRE once every 31 days but no more than five times per year.
