What content does the GMAT cover? The GMAT exam consists of three parts: the Analytical Writing section, the Quantitative section, and the Verbal section. The Analytical Writing Section is not a part of the scaled verbal/quantitative score but is considered very important. This section consists of two essays. The Quantitative section covers three common content areas that are intermixed throughout the section: arithmetic, elementary algebra, and geometry. Two question types appear: problem-solving and data sufficiency. The Verbal section has three types of questions that are mixed throughout the section: reading comprehension, sentence corrections, and critical reasoning.

How is the GMAT scored? Overall scores range from 200 to 800 with separate Verbal and Quantitative scores listed. The Verbal and Quantitative sections also receive individual subscores, which range from 0 to 51. Each essay is given a score between 1 and 6. The overall writing score is the average of the two essay scores. The three most recent test results are submitted to requested schools.

If I did well on my SAT, does that mean I'll do well on the GMAT? If you did well on your SAT, you're probably good at taking standardized tests. This will help on the GMAT. However, the GMAT is written by a different company and tests a separate set of skills, so SAT performance does not predict GMAT ability. The GMAT includes different question types in the math section, and unlike the SAT, emphasizes data interpretation more than geometry. The GMAT also tests logical reasoning ability, which does not appear on the SAT. With preparation and practice, you can increase your scores. Call us and one of our educational consultants would be happy to speak with you about a personalized program recommendation.

Should I take the GRE or the GMAT for my business school application? Until recently, the GMAT was required for all business school applications. Recently, however, this has been changing, and some schools will accept either theGRE or the GMAT. Check with your schools for their testing requirements and then call one of our educational consultants to discuss an individualized testing plan.

How long is my GMAT score valid? Although GMAT scores are valid for five years, some schools would like to see scores from within the past three years. Check with your schools for their preferences.

Where will tutoring take place? If you live in the New York, Boston, or Philadelphia areas, your tutor will meet where it's convenient for you, whether that's in your home, at a nearby library, or in our office. If you do not live near one of these cities, our tutors can work with you online through our Inspirica Anywhere program. They also travel nationally and internationally to work with students in-person through Custom Trips.

When are the GMAT test dates, and how do I register? The GMAT is offered throughout the year by appointment. It is a computer-based test that is given at specific locations around the country. Go to www.mba.com and look for a test center near you. You can take the GMAT once every 31 days but no more than five times per year.
